12 Rapid Fire Questions with Vanco’s
Master Technician Eric Scott by Stephen Medlin
I had a chance to sit down with Vanco’s master technician Eric Scott and discuss his
career in the foodservice industry and his thoughts on the CFESA Certification pro-
gram. Vanco is in Indianapolis, IN and was established in 1971, they have been a Vot-
ing member of CFESA since 1979.
Eric Scott started his career with Vanco in August of 2007 and achieved his CFESA
Master Technician Certification this March. CFESA Master Certification is achieved
when a technician has passed any combination of three out of four testing categories
(Electric, Gas, Steam & Refrigeration). These certifications are held for five years from
the date of achievement, and then they must be re-certified through a process of
continuing education credits.
How did you get your start in the
1 foodservice repair industry? Real-
ly by accident. I was working in residential
building maintenance when Vanco found
my resume I had posted online and con-
tacted me. I never knew this industry ex-
isted and had never really thought about
it.
What type of employment did you
2 have previously? After High School
I started working in the Residential build-
ing construction, maintenance, and HVAC
fields.
How have experiences at previous
3 jobs helped you in this industry?
Repairing residential appliances, HVAC
systems, and having good basic knowl-
edge of electrical systems definitely
helped me transfer into the commercial
side of repairs.
What is the biggest change you
4 have seen in the industry during
your career? Refrigerants. There have
been a lot of changes on the refrigeration
side. The hot-side has seen digital-age up-
dates as well. With touch screens and sol-
id state controls as opposed to mechani-
cal.
